Topic: THE PHARISEES
Word: Matthew 23:2 NLT
“The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses.
Here’s My Take:
Intro:
What to know about THE PHARISEES?
After the Temple fell in 70 CE, Pharisaic(Pharisees) beliefs became the foundation for Judaism, which shaped Jewish life today. The Jews believe so much in them, and follow everything they said.
Their goal was to democratize the Law, making priestly purity and observance accessible to all Jews, not just the priestly class. They provided interpretations (sometimes seen as casuistic) to help people apply the Law to new situations, making it practical for everyday living.
They engaged in vigorous debates over interpretation, with schools like Hillel favoring more lenient applications and Shammai stricter ones. Their efforts aimed at fostering a holy life for all Israel, leading to practices like strict observance in fellowship groups.
Conclusion:
Jesus at various times called Pharisees a brood of vipers, compared them to Satan and called them hypocrites. He also had Pharisees in his group of followers, praised them for following a righteous path.
Song:
Your name is the highest
Your name is the greatest
Your name stands above them all
All thrones and dominions
All powers and positions
Your name stands above them all
Prayer:
Lord, help us not to follow after the lifestyle of the Pharisees. In Jesus name. Amen.
