Topic: Don’t Pity Jonah!
Word: Jonah 1:15 NLT
“Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once!”
Here’s My Take:
Why People Pity Jonah:
2. Fear:
3. The desire not to be held responsible:
Another reason people refuse to throw Jonah out is fear—and the desire not to be held responsible. The Bible records that Jonah said, “Throw me into the sea, and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.” Instead of doing so, the sailors rowed even harder to bring the ship to land. But the sea grew more violent, and they could not succeed.
Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God: “O Lord,” they pleaded, “do not let us die for this man’s sin. And do not hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.” — Jonah 1:12–14 NLT
These verses clearly summarize the two reasons mentioned above: fear and the desire not to be held responsible. People are often held accountable for actions—whether good or bad. This is why, these days, even good people are afraid to help others, because helping may involve police reports, statements, and unnecessary trouble.
Conclusion:
One thing is certain: no matter how dangerous a Jonah is, he will always have sympathizers—people who pity him and refuse to let him go. But don’t pity Jonah; his mission is different.
Song:
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God.
Prayer:
Lord may every hidden Jonah in my life and family be exposed. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
