Here's My Take:
CATALYST(As A Senior Pastor): "Reason why there are so many struggle and tussles for replacements or so many break outs when a founder/Senior Pastor of a particular Church dies is because most of them didn't do their underground jobs well. If they had understood the principle of fatherhood non of that would have happened.
You can't have a full blown Priest under you and not allow him to manifest the gift of God in him. Every seed needs it's space to germinate and bear fruits. No matter how loyal and humble he is, a time will come the urge to leave will come. Though he may not act it or show it, but I tell you, such thoughts won't be far from him.
It's better to empower him by opening a branch for him, to encourage him to manifest. Even if you chose to keep him around you, maybe because of how useful you think he is to your ministry, always give him chances to manifest. It will make him feel loved, accepted and valued. It will make him think that you actually value and recognize what he has. But when he doesn't see any of those from you, the urge will become so strong.
Conclusion:
No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. Luke 8:16 KJV
