Here's My Take:
Intro
Before we throw more light on the different Dictionary definitions of Friend, we'll like to help us understand who an Acquaintance is. Because most of us, including me doesn't really understand the difference between acquaintance and friend, thereby misrepresenting acquaintance as friend
Acquaintance /əˈkweɪntəns/ is someone who you know and see sometimes, but who is not one of your close friends
Acquaintances could be someone you've met several times, maybe share some ideas and off everyone goes. Example is someone you met at the viewing center and you guys belong to the same club. You can talk games and share ideas and suggestions, that doesn't make him your friend. Because everything you do ends in viewing center. Someone can go as far as calling him my football friend.
But when it goes beyond talking football into knowing yourselves, friendship can began.
Friendship start from acquaintance. Because you gotta see or meet someone before you connect as friends.
Conclusion:
It's only those that are in acquaintance level but claiming to be friend that used to betray, steal, blackmail, disappoint, etc, the one that calls him/her friend.
