NEIGHBOURHOOD: There's this Igbo adage that says "nwa bu nwa oha niile". It means that a child is not for his/her parents alone. That child is for everybody. In the same way that if the child does well tomorrow, everyone will benefit. And the child becomes bad, everyone will be affected. This is why the child's neighbourhood doesn't leave the responsibility of training and nurturing the child to his/her parents alone. They get involved as well.
If you're in a neighborhood where everyone minds his/her business, you may miss one of the greatest benefits of community: people looking out for one another. My neighbourhood was the best because they helped shape my growing up, even though they tend to report everything we did wrong.
In the neighbourhood everyone joins in the nurturing and establishment of the child. That kind of environment created accountability. You knew that someone was watching, not to destroy you, but to help keep you on the right path. Sometimes, the silence of a neighbourhood can become the permission evil needs to grow.
Conclusion:
When everyone chooses to mind their own business, wrong behaviours can continue unnoticed, children can go astray without correction, and vulnerable people can suffer without anyone intervening. A healthy neighbourhood creates a network of accountability where people care enough to speak up, correct what is wrong, protect one another, and report dangers before they become disasters.
