Here’s My Take:
HOW TO KNOW A PHARISEE:
4. Someone who is scared of being replaced: nobody ever fits into this like the Pharisees. The Jewish leaders felt threatened by John the Baptist because they had heard about the Messiah and how He was coming to take over. This made them send priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to find out if John was the Messiah.
He came right out and said, “I am not the Messiah.” “Well then, who are you?” they asked. “Are you Elijah?” “No,” he replied. “Are you the Prophet we are expecting?” “No.” “Then who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?”

In their minds, how could someone who was not a priest—someone who did not have a diploma in theology—have such a crowd following him and coming for baptism?
Because they could not believe it, they sent people to find out who he was.
This is what we often see in offices. People feel threatened by the appearance of a new employee. They assume that if they are not careful, this person may become the favorite, so they begin to look for his loopholes.
Conclusion:
- When you don’t realize that Pharisees are around you, they can destabilize you and even your career.
- When you don't know that you have Pharisees around you, they will mesmerize you, your career, etc.
