2. Deception: 

The Bible said, as the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart, Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold. So the captain went down after him. “How can you sleep at a time like this?” he shouted. “Get up and pray to your god! Maybe he will pay attention to us and spare our lives.” Jonah 1:4-6 NLT

I told us yesterday that Jonah claiming to be fast asleep during such a raging storm is deception. Looking closely at the verses above, you’ll notice there weren’t many people on that ship — enough that the captain personally went below to find Jonah.

That suggests everyone needed to pull together to save the ship. But Jonah hid, pretending to be in a deep sleep. May Jonah not be our portion. Amen. I can only imagine the look on the captain’s face when he found Jonah sleeping in the hold.

Conclusion:

Can you picture this Jonah scenario? Now imagine you’re the captain who finds someone sleeping and snoring while the ship is being torn apart. What would you do if you were that captain?

Me: I’d throw him into the water before he asked for it.
