When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those who are teaching wrong doctrine. 1 Timothy 1:3

When Paul wrote 1 Timothy, certain men were infiltrating the church with false doctrines, such as speculations in myths and genealogies, unusual teachings on the law, playing foolish word games, the promotion of certain self-denying practices, and the claim to a secret knowledge. In teaching these things, they were abandoning the faith. In response, Paul instructed Timothy to strongly rebuke any false teachers, and in some cases to use even stronger measures, such as exclusion from the church. Though we face a different set of attacks on the Christian faith today, the pattern outlined here of standing up for the truth remains the same.(Optical Study Bible)
