Here's My Take: 

Why do people say goodbye?

1. When they're not engaged or when they're over engaged.

Just like we know, when someone follow you sheepishly without knowing what's gonna be the outcome of his/her follower_ship, s/he will easily say good bye. But when the purpose is pronounced, goodbye may be neglected.

Some people have been into a relationship for more than four years and still counting. I know that marriage is a school of it's own, but four years is more than enough to graduate!

When you keep a guy/girl for so long, claiming relationship, s/he is likely going take a walk. Because prolonged activities kill excitement and vibes.

Being into relationship(healthy) isn't a must; I'll even say that some people that did it ended up into a shattered home. While our Ancestors, some of them never knew who their wives was till they were given to them for marriage. Yet the had good and blissful homes. And this generation will keep relationship/s, yet...

Should it be then said that those men, that never knew what school was were more wiser and mature than this present generation, full of learned people?!

Conclusion:

Based on the things I'd observed so far, I'll say it's better to leave two fools in a ship than two wise men. Because the two fools already knows that they don't know and they share ideas. But the wise may not agree with each other.
